Each task has a typical job size, for example about 45,000 tokens for a coding task and 4,000 for an email, split 60% input and 40% output. We price that at the model's list rates and scale the output by how much the model actually writes, thinking included, in Artificial Analysis's tests. Then we multiply by your monthly volume.
Everyday runs each model at its strongest reasoning setting that gives a full answer within 45 seconds, which is how most people use them. Max effort is the setting benchmark headlines use. It scores a little higher but often costs several times as much, because the model thinks for longer.
Because some models think far more than others. Reasoning tokens are billed as output, so a model with a low price per token can still cost more per task than a pricier model that gets to the answer quickly.
Use the value or fastest pick for routine tasks and keep the strongest model for hard ones, keep prompts short, and turn on prompt caching where your provider offers it. This calculator doesn't include caching discounts, so a cached workload will usually cost less than shown.
